The next-generation display technology, Micro LED, has attracted much attention. However, before Micro LED officially enters the stage of commercial mass production, Mini LED with lower technical barriers will be launched first. It is reported that at present, panel manufacturers and LED manufacturers have launched cooperation. In the initial stage, it may be introduced from the two major applications of display screen and TV panel backlight, and launch super fine-pitch displays, as well as ultra-power-saving and ultra-thin direct-lit Mini LED backlight TV panels. .

The industry revealed that if Mini LED is used as the TV panel backlight and the direct-lit design is adopted, it can be made into local dimming, which will have better light transmission uniformity and higher contrast than general edge-lit backlights ( Contrast Ratio) and more light and dark details. Compared with OLED panels, LCD panels with Mini LED backlight design have better color dispersion, but the thickness can be the same as OLED panels.

At present, Taiwan-based panel manufacturers are developing relatively rapidly in Mini LED backlight technology. It is expected that TV products using Mini LED backlight technology may be unveiled as soon as next year's CES, although Mini LED is regarded as the mid-term of the new generation of Micro LED display technology. strategy, but without prejudice to the new business opportunities that the development of Mini LED technology is expected to bring to relevant supply chain manufacturers.

For Taiwan-based LED chip manufacturers with mature RGB LED and CSP LED chip mass production capabilities, such as Epistar and Lextar, Mini LED is a new market worth looking forward to, whether used in panel backlights or super fine-pitch displays.

Taking a TV panel as an example, the current edge-lit backlight design only needs 10 high-brightness LEDs, and the mobile phone backlight needs only 25 LEDs, but if it is converted to Mini LED, the number of TV panel backlight LEDs can be increased to tens of thousands. The number of LED backlights required for a 5-inch mobile phone panel is 9,000 to 10,000.

As for display applications, the current monthly shipment of RGB LEDs used in displays reaches 300KK sets, and the number of RGB LEDs used in displays is as high as 10,000 to 20,000 KK sets per month. As a potential market, Mini LED also has a lot of room to play in the display.

For TFT LCD panel factories with mature technology, especially Taiwan-based panel factories, since the development of AMOLED display technology has been relatively backward, but using the existing TFT LCD technology foundation, combined with the same mature RGB LED technology, The introduction of a panel with a new generation of backlight design, its power saving effect, picture quality, thickness can be comparable to AMOLED, and the color diffractive and cost advantages can surpass AMOLED, and can easily import the mass-produced special-shaped cutting and curved display , so it's an opportunity anyway.

It is rumored that Taiwan-based panel manufacturers, including AUO and Innolux, have started investing in Mini LED backlight designs for new products. Whether Mini LED-backlit LCD can become a new weapon for Taiwanese manufacturers to compete with AMOLED is worthy of continuous attention.
